Saints and Scones!

Sr Ann writes:

Every Sunday afternoon this term, a delicious smell of baking pervaded the Cambridge University Catholic Chaplaincy, as a group of students gathered in my study to discuss the life and work of a range of holy men and women, over a traditional homemade cream tea. The saints studied have ranged from Blessed Jane of Aza to St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross via St Hildegard of Bingen and Blessed Cyprian Tansi. We have generally looked at a man and woman each time (we began with Blessed Jordan and Blessed Diana) and over the past eight weeks we’ve considered a married couple, a concert pianist turned Carmelite friar and a former slave who became a religious sister. The point has been to explore the sheer variety of God’s artistry in the lives of the saints, and to allow each of these extraordinarily diverse voices to speak to us of the love of Christ. There have been some wonderful conversations!

I am also proud to report that, after rigorous training, every graduate of the Fisher House Saints and Scones group now observes the proper (ie the Devonian) scone etiquette - anyone found guilty of the terrible Cornish crime of putting the jam on before the clotted cream has to come to the next meeting dressed as the saint of the day…
